In my first interview at DNAinfo.com, I said I wanted to do a series of profiles of interesting New Yorkers. Months later, we hired Elizabeth Ladzinski, who is a very talented photographer and videographer. She spent the next six months shooting, interviewing, editing and creating these wonderful stories. We covered 10 “blocks” with five subjects in each one. Some of the stories are about individuals; others are about the businesses that make these neighborhoods special. It took almost two years, but the series is finally live. After some cuts, there are 10 blocks and 49 stories to enjoy.

As it turns out, police are some of the worst offenders blocking bike lanes in Manhattan, but they are certainly not the only ones. DNAinfo reporter Ben Fractenburg rode his bike all over Manhattan’s bike lanes and documented who and what was blocking his path. I put together this map to show the obstacles he [...]

I originally built this template for a series that will be published later this summer, but I was able to reuse it for this series. DNAinfo reporters went around Manhattan, got makeovers at four different locations and documented the process.

This is an updated version of a graph I made in the spring of 2010 after the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene began capturing and vaccinating raccoons against rabies. I realized we were approaching the anniversary date the health department began the program, so I thought we should do a follow-up. We found [...]

As Valentine’s Day approached, I began building this “date calculator,” which became very complicated very fast. One of the DNAinfo reporters put together a spreadsheet of over 100 different date ideas, and I began to figure out how to match those dates to three questions the reader would answer to determine their best date option. [...]
